I made great time on the way back from Ocala, and I pulled into the driveway at almost exactly eleven-thirty. I ran inside and changed out of the denim dress and into a pair of jeans with a long-sleeve T-shirt and a pair of combat boots. Then I turned off the lights and stepped outside on the deck to call out to Chelsea.

“Hey!” she said, startling me even though I expected her to answer. I guess talking to spirits never becomes so commonplace that it isn’t a tad creepy.

“Hey you!” I smiled as she hovered just above the deck a few feet from me. “I figured I’d be able to see you very well tonight with the moon as bright as it is!”

She looked up and smiled at it, and then she held her arms out, turning her hands this way and that as she shimmered in the moonlight.

“I can’t talk long,” I said. “I’m heading over to Rachel’s.”

“I don’t have a watch, but judging from how high the moon is, I’m thinking it’s pretty late for visiting.”

I settled into one of the deck chairs and propped my feet in another.

“She wants me there before midnight. There’s some guy who talks to ghosts coming to her house. Like The Ghost Whisperer.”

Chelsea laughed, and the high-pitched tinkling echoed through the trees. “The what?”

“The Ghost Whisperer. You know, that show with Jennifer Love Hewitt?”

She stopped laughing and cocked her head to one side. “The girl from Party of Five? She did that scary movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer. Is that what you’re talking about?”

“No. The Ghost Whisperer. She could talk to ghosts, and she would figure out what they needed to be at peace. I guess it must have been filmed after … well, after your time.”

“So, this ghost whisper guy, he’s going to find out what Rachel’s husband wants her to do? Isn’t he kind of doing your job?”

“No. I mean, yes. I guess that’s what I was originally supposed to do. But I haven’t been able to figure out how to talk to this ghost.”

She sat cross-legged just above the table and frowned. “Have you called his name? Asked him to talk to you?”

“Why, no! What a novel concept! Why didn’t I think of that?” I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “Of course, I called out to him. Rachel and I both did. Nothing happened.”

She ignored my sarcasm. “Maybe he’s moved on. Maybe’s he’s not there anymore. Speaking of moving, were you at the cabin last night? I saw lights on.”

“You were at the cabin last night?”

She shrugged. “I go back there sometimes. I thought if I ever got out of that curve, I’d never go back. But something draws me there from time to time. So, was it you? Were you in the cabin?”

“Yeah.”

She stretched her legs out in front of her and leaned over them to reach for her toes, pretending she was stretching. “Why? What were you doing there?”

“Um, I was trying to hide from a reporter.
